The Natural Vagina

The basic function of your vagina is to provide a route from the outside of your vagina to your uterus and the rest of your internal reproductive system. The natural, acidic, pH of your vagina acts to prevent infections. The acidic nature of your vagina is caused by natural, good bacteria produced by your body. When your vagina is healthy, the vagina keeps itself clean and healthy by producing secretions of normal vaginal discharge. The natural balance of the vagina can be disrupted by anything that interferes with its normal environment.

What is Normal Vaginal Discharge?

First it’s important to understand that all women experience some amount of vaginal discharge. Glands in your vaginal and cervix produce small amounts of fluid that flows out of your vagina everyday taking with it old cells that line the vagina. Your normal vaginal discharge helps to clean the vagina, as well as keep it lubricated and free from infection and other germs.

 A normal vaginal discharge does not have a foul odour and usually has no smell at all. Normal vaginal discharge often appears clear or milky when it dries on your clothing; occasionally you may notice white spots or a vaginal discharge that is thin and stringy looking.

Other things that may cause changes in the appearance or consistency of your vaginal discharge include:

1. Your menstrual cycle
2. Emotional stress
3. Pregnancy
4. Any prescribed or over-the-counter medications you take including hormones such as the Pill.
5. Sexual excitement
6. Breastfeeding
7. Ovulation
8. Your diet

Other things that can upset the natural pH balance of your vagina and lead to vaginal infections include vaginal douches, antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes, or the presence of another infection.

Your menstrual cycle has a significant affect on the type of vaginal discharge you experience throughout the month. Did you know you’re more likely to experience vaginal infections just before or during your period?

This is because the pH balance of your vagina varies during your monthly cycle causing the acidic level of your vagina to be at its’ lowest point a few days before and during your period. About halfway between your periods, an increase in vaginal discharge that appears clear is normal. This increased wetness and clear vaginal discharge is an indication of ovulation.

Some signs that may indicate an abnormal vaginal discharge and infection include: 

• Changes in color, consistency, or amount
• Constant, increased vaginal discharge
• Presence of itching, discomfort, or any rash
• Vaginal burning during urination
• The presence of blood when it’s not your period time
• Cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge
• A foul odour accompanied by yellowish, greenish, or grayish white vaginal discharge

If you have a vaginal discharge along with any of these signs, consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Vaginal discharges are common and it’s likely you’ll have at least one vaginal infection in your life.

Vaginal yeast infections are also very common and over-the-counter treatments are available; however, it’s important to never self-diagnose a yeast infection unless you have previously been diagnosed by your doctor.

So who says shopping is only about spending money?

Let’s face it; a man or woman in uniform will catch everyone’s eye at a Halloween party. One costume that is easy, fun and yet isn’t so out of character are sailor or navy themed pieces.

At FLO, we embody the personification of today’s modern women, and have found these qualities in our new Ambassadors – Alison J. Victor and Adila Shakir, both radio personalities from RedFM.

 Alison (or Aly as she is known) hosts the mid-day slot on RedFM’s Eleven 2 Three, a show which has developed into a staple throughout the day, starting off with the 104 Minute Music Marathon at 10am, then on to 40 minutes of non-stop music on Eleven 2 Three. She also created a segment called The BIG RED Food Review, where a restaurant is reviewed on air for a week and listeners have a chance to pick up dining vouchers to try the food for themselves. The reviews are also written and published in the Metro Section of the Star on Saturdays.

Born to a Portuguese-Dutch mother and Tamil-Sri Lankan father, Aly started her life in Klang and has lived in Alor Setar, Penang and Staffordshire where she attended boarding school right after her PMR examinations.

Ambitious and a go-getter, Aly and her sister started horse-riding in 1993. When she heard that a small boarding school the UK was looking for students that specialized in horse riding, she jumped at the chance and pestered her dad until he said yes. Two months later, her bags packed and seated on a plane, Aly was ready to take that one step closer to being an Olympic Rider.

Her dreams have changed since then. Trained and competed successfully both in the UK and here back in Malaysia at a National Level, as she got older, it became more important to ensure that she had a strong education behind her. Aly graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Architecture, Planning & Environmental Studies from Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.

Along the way, Aly discovered more of herself and her passions. Coming back to Malaysia, her shot to stardom came when she became one of the finalists on the popular online reality search programme, Malaysian Dreamgirl. “MDG launched my career, as official Radio Station Red FM offered me a job as a DJ,” said Aly. “With the guidance of my boss Tim Ho, who had the greatest belief in me right from the start, I began my life as DJ Aly in May 2008,” she reminisces.

Aly also keeps busy with emceeing and modelling gigs, and has admitted that keeping busy during the week is very important for her, so that she can kick back and relax when the weekend rolls by. And when the opportunity does arise and with sufficient experience behind her, Aly would love to make the transition from radio to TV.

Adila (or Dilly as she is known) is the sweet and petite half of RedFM’s Breakfast Show with JD & Dilly. Dilly, who spent her growing up years in Saudi Arabia and Johor Bahru before calling Kuala Lumpur home, is every bit the strong, modern and independent woman.

Being a Presenter of the Breakfast Show is no easy feat. She is also the show’s Producer, and is very much involved in the show’s content when it comes to researching and editing. “It’s not exactly glam when you have to wake up at 4:30am and head straight for the studio,” said Dilly. “That’s why four cups of kopi-o takes me through a typical four-hour morning show!” she added in good humour.

Dilly wasn’t always in radio. This fair lass started her career as a voice talent, and from thereon, built connections and was thus introduced to the world of advertising and radio. Dilly took on several jobs after that – a telemarketer, doing outdoor advertising and worked for a lifestyle publication, where coincidentally was where she met JD for the first time. After some years, their paths crossed again.

“JD was already with RedFM, and he suggested I try radio,” said Dilly. “To be honest, I was quite hesitant at first. But then I got my demo done, sent it in, got an interview and was offered the job in 2007,” she added.

Dilly’s stint with RedFM started with a weekend show only, then a 2-day show, and eventually progressed to a mid-day show. Some time in 2008, the station paired her up with JD and they were given the Breakfast Show.

Also a freelance vocal talent and emcee, Dilly has hosted plenty of events for corporations and multi-nationals, and also provided voice talent for radio/television advertisements which include brand names like Sony, Maybank, Panasonic, DiGi, STAR Publications, Jerneh Insurance, Mamee Double-Decker, LG, York, Nokia, Nike, Halls candy, MBF Lady Card, Kao Laurier, and Carrefour, to name a few. She is also providing the voices for the lead characters in three separate ongoing animation projects- ABC Monsters, Saladin and Ivan’s Thoughts. And if you think these are all, Dilly sings too! She has provided and recorded back-up vocals for various local artistes such as Anuar Zain, Nora, Jamal Abdillah, Leonard Tan, Ella, Adibah Noor, Hannah Tan, Mawi and many more.

For now, Dilly is contented working hard and spending her day offs at her favourite hang-out: home.
